Nicole Penney – Staff Profile
Meet Nicole – UX/UI Developer at Axios
From the beginning…
My career essentially started out in the print industry nearly 8 years ago. One might say I was ‘thrown into the deep end’, and shortly after I started my first job, I was designing and managing weekly magazine publications and sending them off to the press every Wednesday night. Although it was stressful and I didn’t exactly appreciate it back then, I now realise that this experience was an important (and necessary) learning curve that set significant foundations for my career, the importance of excellent time management skills and adhering to strict deadlines.
I eventually made the decision to leave the print world behind and focus more on my passion which is web design, development and most importantly, user experience. It’s been well over 4 years now and I’m still excited by this dynamic industry and the way that it’s continuously evolving and taking my role to new places.
How long have you been with Axios?
I’ve been with Axios for just over 3 months now.
What do you do at Axios?
In my role as a UX/UI Developer, it is my job to improve user satisfaction with a product by refining the usability, accessibility, and user-friendliness provided in the interaction with a product. From mocking up wireframes and prototypes, to liaising with designers, developers and assisting in Front End Development, it is my responsibility that the end result is a product that looks good, is intuitive and easy to use.
What do you do in your spare time?
I’ve recently started doing dance classes with my partner which has been a lot of fun. I enjoy live theatre/seeing a good show, but also like having a quiet night at home with friends watching a movie or playing a good game.
Travel is a passion of mine, I love camping and enjoy a good hike on the weekends if the weather is nice, as well as heading back to my hometown of Wallaroo to see my family when I can.
Why did you choose Axios?
I was ready for a new challenge. Although I’ve had a lot of experience with web design and development, software and applications is relatively new territory for me and I love expanding my knowledge and learning new facets of the industry.
What do you like most about working at Axios?
The people, it’s such a great environment to work in with so many knowledgeable individuals to learn from.
What is your favourite quote?
“I can be changed by what happens to me but I refuse to be reduced by it.”
“Don’t put all your eggs in one basket”
What is your biggest Achievement?
I don’t really like settling on a single achievement or milestone as I believe it’s always good to strive for more. I always want to improve and further my knowledge and career.
